Eviction

"This is pure bull crap!” Tommy, the oldest of us yells. "Calm down, man," I tell him, “Yelling and stating the obvious isn't going to help us." My two brothers and I are standing, waiting for our ride outside of the place we once called home. For over six years we had been living here, and now we were being kicked out, just because the new landlord wanted the house to become his "Summer Home". We had been moving our stuff out of the house and were planning to; hopefully, get a ride to our grandmother's. "Dave?” My little brother, Robbie pulls my shirt, "Why do we have to go?" I leaned down to him, "Well, you see Robbie the house doesn’t belong to us. It belongs to-" "A Fricken Moron who has no sense of compassion, and just wants another place to play poker in the summer!" Tom interjects. I sigh, "Thank you for your insight, Tommy...Now shut up." I sometimes wonder who the actual mature one is. I turn back to Robbie, “As I was saying, the house belongs to a different guy who was letting us stay there. And he wants it back now." Robbie stares at me for a moment, trying to understand this new change. I can only imagine what's going through the six year old’s mind, but I can tell it isn't good. I look over our stuff and grab Robbie's stuffed dog. "Here," I tell him as I hand over the dog, "Why don't you go ahead and hold onto Joey for a while. Okay?" Robbie graciously takes it, and goes to sit on the couch in the front yard. I put my hands on my hips and take another look at our old home, before saying, "Tommy, how long did she say it would take to get here?" Tommy, still fuming, mutters several silent curses to himself before answering, "She said it would be about three hours before she'd get here. And she's bringing the truck, so we should have room to put this stuff." Tommy glares back at the house one last time. "This just sucks."  I don't say anything to him this time, because he's right. "I'm sure we’ll be fine at Gram’s until we can locate another place to stay at." I tell him, "We'll just have to find some local jobs in her hometown." Tom snorts, "Yeah, right. A small town surrounded by nothing but forest. There's bound to be a job." I take one last glance at Robbie; he's sitting on the couch slowly rocking back and forth with Joey in his lap. "Tom, we will make this work. We have to."

This was a small piece I did back in college.

This made me so sad for the little one...Raises A LOT of questions, like why 'Gram' isn't taking care of her apparently-orphaned grandchildren...Interesting!
